Summer Study

Picture
The Summer Study program at North Cross School in Roanoke, Virginia allows participants to choose from a broad range of enrichment programs and camps designed to provide visiting students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in American culture and an English language setting, activities that are interesting, challenging, and fun. These offerings are intended to improve the social, mental, and physical skills of participants and allow them to make new friends. North Cross School has been hosting summer programs for more than 30 years.

Cuisine
Experiencing local food is one of the ways our Chinese campers immerse themselves in American culture. We try to expose campers to a different cuisine each day. When we go to a restaurant, campers read the menu and order in English. We ask campers to write about their experiences eating different foods, which helps them develop English skills.

On-Campus Activities
Campers interact intensively with high school and college students on a daily basis in each activity. Each group of 10 campers work with one or two North Cross students who help them speak English. During the final ceremony, each group presents a video of their experience.

Off-Campus Activities
Exploring the Roanoke Valley area allows Chinese summer campers to see a variety of sites and experience various activities. Campers hike up mountains, explore local museums, investigate universities, watch baseball games, shop at local businesses, and visit historical sites.
